While researching my trip to Taiwan, I came across a few articles about an abandoned beachside community full of futuristic – now retro – homes. This community, commonly called Wanli UFO Village, is only an hour bus ride away from Taipei. By the way, public transportation in Taiwan is phenomenal. Anyway, being so easy to get to, I had to go.
The day was cloudy, windy and drizzly. I supposed that added to the abandoned feeling of the area, but what I really loved was hearing the waves crash on the beach, right next to the houses. It’s not trespassing to go here, though it sure felt like it. A handful of homes looked restored, but most were in various states of decay.
There’s a lot of conflicting information online about this community, so I won’t say much about it’s history. Except for one thing – these homes are based on the Futuro and Venturo homes designed by Matti Suuronen. There is very good evidence that they are not the real thing. Regardless, Wanli UFO Village is one of the most interesting places I’ve ever visited.
